The 1-5-25 Network Effect, Explained Simply

The 1-5-25 idea is the starting point of our guides. It is easy to say and surprisingly useful to understand: you connect with 5 people, each of those connects with 5 more, and suddenly your network reaches 25 people without you meeting them one by one.
How it multiplies
| Step | New people |
|---|---|
| You | 1 |
| Your direct contacts | 5 |
| Their contacts | 25 |
| The next step | 125 |
| The step after that | 625 |
Each step multiplies the one before it. That is why networks look slow at the start and fast later.
A reality check
Not everyone introduces 5 people. Many will introduce one or two, and some will introduce nobody. If each person introduces only 2 people, the steps look like 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32. It is slower, but it still multiplies. These numbers show how multiplication works. They are an illustration, not a forecast, and your real results depend on your offer, your effort and your market.
What this means for a small business
- Start with five. You do not need hundreds of contacts. Five good relationships are enough to begin.
- Quality beats quantity. Five people who trust you are worth more than 500 who barely know you.
- Make it easy to pass you on. The easier it is to share you, the more of your 5 will do it.
- Say thank you. Gratitude keeps people willing to help again.
Try this today
- Write the names of 5 people who know and trust your work.
- Write one sentence that explains who you help and how.
- Send each person a short, friendly message with that sentence.
